The focus of the program of study is the artistic training in the major and minor subjects, in addition, music theory, musicology and music education compulsory subjects provide a well-founded training.
In the department for wind and percussion instruments, half of the professorships are filled, with one exception, which means that our professors also play in renowned orchestras. The students benefit from this both through the opportunity to accompany orchestra rehearsals and performances and thus experience the everyday life of the orchestra directly, as well as through the strong active networking of the professors in the orchestra world of Germany – e.g. regarding short-term auditions.
Students are intensively supported in primarily small classes. The exchange between the various wind classes is supported, among other things, by joint class concerts. In the university orchestra as well as in chamber music and special projects, students can expand their orchestral and chamber music experience. Furthermore, the wind department offers audition courses on weekends as well as workshops for young musicians interested in studying at the Mainz School of Music. These take place around Easter time.
During the program of study, participation in the university orchestra is compulsory in phases.
After a successful audition, students also have the opportunity to be accepted into the “Junge Ensemble Philharmonie”, a collaborative project between the Philharmonic State Orchestra Mainz and the Mainz School of Music, where they play in the orchestra in a one-year internship.
The competition for students in the concert exam postgraduate course, which takes place every two years, offers the winner of the sponsorship award the chance to perform a solo concert with the Philharmonic State Orchestra.
The Mainz School of Music regularly offers master classes for young musicians. The workshops with teaching staff from the HfM Mainz are aimed at current and future music students.
The next Wind Academy will take place in spring 2026.
