Musically highly gifted young people can be admitted to the preparatory class of the Mainz School of Music while still at school. Students in the preparatory class receive individual lessons from instrumental or vocal lecturers of the Mainz School of Music, as well as instruction in Music Theory. A prerequisite for admission to the Pre-College is passing an aptitude test.

The preparatory class of the Mainz School of Music is integrated into the university-wide concept of the “pre-university program (for school pupils)”. The course certificates obtained within the preparatory class can be recognized for a later program of study.

You can attend our group courses as an auditor at short notice at any time. Many prospective students use this opportunity to learn about the requirements of a music program of study.

However, if you wish to regularly attend courses at the Mainz School of Music for the purpose of further and continuing education, you will need a (fee-based) guest student certificate.

The guest student program at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz serves general further and continuing education in specific fields of knowledge, without aiming for a formal qualification (certificate, diploma, etc.).

In principle, all lectures at the School of Music are open to guest students. For all other events at the Mainz School of Music, the consent of the lecturer must be obtained and noted on the guest student certificate. Participation in individual lessons at the Mainz School of Music is generally excluded. Guest students may neither acquire course certificates nor take examinations.

Guest students can attend one or more courses; admission is granted for one semester at a time. A formal qualification such as the Abitur is not required for admission. However, you must apply for a guest student certificate. This is always limited to the current semester. If you wish to continue the guest student program, you must reapply for each subsequent semester.

Information on fees and registration options can be found on the pages of the Center for Continuing Education of the University (link in the right column).

We are pleased if you apply for a program of study at our School of Music. You can find information on the procedure, the required documents, and the aptitude test on the Application page or by following the button.

A stay abroad during your program of study is always beneficial. At the University of Mainz and the School of Music, there are various opportunities to realize such a stay, be it for a study period, a language course, or an internship. The International Office of the University provides fundamental advising for planning a stay abroad and offers a wide range of information on funding programs, application processes, many target countries, and the university’s partner universities.

Requirements for Application and Selection:

  • Timely registration with all required data in the applicant list with up to two universities, possibly indicating preference.
  • Submission of a printout of the current transcript of records to the subject coordinator (includes proof of language proficiency and academic qualification).
  • Should more students apply than exchange places are available at individual universities, selection will be performance-based. All previously earned credits will be included in the decision.
  • If necessary, applicants will be asked to submit a letter of motivation or invited to a selection interview.

Note: Since the subject of music primarily involves individual lessons, the partner university usually makes the final decision based on an audition (CD, or on-site audition).
