Yes. Please be sure to submit your application by the deadline and include an informal letter from your school confirming that you are currently taking the Abitur. Please submit your Abitur diploma via email as soon as you receive it.

You are welcome to sit in on our group classes at short notice at any time. Many prospective students take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the requirements of a music degree program. However, if you’d like to regularly attend courses at the Mainz School of Music for the purpose of continuing education or professional development, you’ll need a (fee-based) guest student permit. You may submit an application for only one degree program at the Mainz School of Music at a time.

The aptitude test remains valid for the two semesters following the examination date—that is, for one year. With the results of the aptitude test, you can be considered for a spot in a degree program during this period without having to take the aptitude test again. You do not need to submit another application to the HfM, but you must submit another application to Johannes Gutenberg University for a place in the program!

Credits already completed and documented will be credited toward the degree program, provided they are relevant to the chosen degree program at the Mainz School of Music. Specific recognition is granted upon proposal after enrollment. To this end, all necessary documents (such as diplomas and credits) must already be submitted with the application.

The aptitude test must be taken in its entirety.

Registration for the Aptitude Test: The Student Advising Office at the Mainz School of Music will verify whether you meet the formal requirements for admission to the aptitude test for your desired degree program and whether the application materials you submitted are complete. If anything is missing or unclear, we will contact you.

Applying to the university: You’ve submitted your application—what’s next? Now you’ll need to be patient. Your application will go through several steps, which you can follow here. The processing time varies depending on the application process and, if applicable, the time of year you apply. The university’s Student Service Center will process your application for admission, in consultation with the student advising office of the School of Music, if necessary.

For the same degree program: twice. This is specified in the examination regulations or the entrance examination regulations.

Yes, we offer preparatory courses. The courses cover music theory and aural training and are offered in two tracks: classical music, and Jazz and Pop Music. Prospective students interested in pursuing a program of study in School Music (teacher education for Gymnasiums) can also enroll in a course in practical piano playing for schools (“Schupra”).
The courses generally take place during the lecture period at the Mainz School of Music; participation is subject to charge. Current dates are published at the beginning of each lecture period.

The examination program is the list of pieces you will play or sing during the aptitude test. It is required for all instrumental and vocal examinations and can be changed up to two weeks before the examination.

The repertoire list includes the major musical works you have studied to date. It is required only for your respective major and is provided for informational purposes only; therefore, it will not be tested or reviewed during the aptitude test.

No, that is not possible. You will play or sing together with students from the Mainz School of Music. An exception applies to singers; they may bring an accompanist.

Unfortunately, outside guests are not permitted. Aptitude tests are open to the university community; that is, only members of the Mainz School of Music—teaching staff, employees, and currently enrolled students—may attend.

If you do not plan to take the aptitude test, you may cancel your registration by emailing studienbuero-hfm@uni-mainz.de no later than one day before the examination. If you do not take the examination without first canceling in writing, the examination will be counted as an unsuccessful attempt.
