Elementary Music Education (B.M.A.)

70 semester hours in the compulsory module,

30-40 semester hours in the elective compulsory modules (depending on selection)

Application for and admission to the Bachelor's program is only possible for a compulsory module as per Art. 6 (3)

 Bachelor of Musical Arts (B.M.A.)

Program objective

The course of study combines artistic/educational training with a supplemental qualification in areas of practical professional significance.

It prepares students for work in private and public music schools, kindergartens, cultural centers, and for careers in the field of concert management.

The Bachelor's degree thus represents an initial academic professional qualification.

Course structure and contents

Two out of the three available elective compulsory modules must be selected:

  • Administrative Studies (20 semester hours)
  • Intercultural Music Education (20 semester hours)
  • Special Education (20 semester hours)

 Other academic qualifications

Professional job shadowing and internships.

Students must also take elective compulsory courses totaling 10 semester hours.

Bachelor's examination

1st part: written Bachelor's thesis on a topic related to one of the compulsory modules (deadline for completion: 6 weeks)

2nd part: oral or practical artistic final exam, generally a demonstration lesson (duration: 30 minutes)

Note: All qualifications earned during the course of study are accounted for in the overall examination grade.

Special features

This course is offered in cooperation with the Peter Cornelius Conservatory of the City of Mainz.

The elective compulsory modules are taught in cooperation with internal and external university partners (JGU faculties 02 and 05, Foreign Language Center, City of Mainz).

An intensive student advising program has been put in place for the degree program. For foreign students, the university's International Office organizes orientation days and offers events to promote the students’ social well-being.

The School of Music also supports students through the selection and execution of career-related internships abroad.

Special notes for international applicants for a place at university:

Foreign applicants for a place at the university must hold qualifications equivalent to the general higher education entrance qualification ('Allgemeine Hochschulreife'). Good knowledge of English and at least a basic understanding of German are also expected. A German language assessment test is conducted at the start of the course of study. The university’s Foreign Language Center offers an intensive course to prepare non-German-speaking students for university entrance as well as German courses for enrolled students. At the end of the second year of study, students are required to take a language test to demonstrate their proficiency in German.

2. Requirements for the qualifying examination

Major subject Elementary Music Education
  • Improvised movement to music and voice (defined by examiners, with preparation time)
  • Presentation of a prepared text (free selection)
  • Preparation of a group topic (defined by examiners, with preparation time)

Preparation time: 60 minutes 

Instrumental minor subject (classical guitar or piano)
  • Sight-playing of easy pieces (three difficulty levels, no preparation)
  • Accompaniment of a song for one voice (melody can optionally be sung, no preparation)
  • Simple improvisation on a topic provided by examiners (no preparation)
  • Presentation of two easy, prepared pieces (free selection)

Minor subjects and music theory

(Assessment of level of awareness)

  • Composition exam (completion of a provided melody, duration: 45 minutes)
  • Ear training dictation (progressive degree of difficulty, duration: 20 minutes)
  • Sight-singing of a simple provided piece
  • Repetition through tapping and notation of easy provided rhythmic examples

Admissions interview  The admissions interview centers around the applicant’s musical pre-education, general talents, and personal interests.


3. Career fields

The Bachelor’s program in Music is especially focused on practical educational methods that are of professional relevance. This is achieved through artistic/educational training combined with a qualification in professionally relevant fields. On the one hand, students are provided with good practical skills for the traditional career fields; on the other hand, the broadly conceived curriculum is intended to account for new fields as well.  

The primary career field for graduates of the Elementary Music Education course is work in music education at public institutions and private music schools. While graduates of the undergraduate program will not be certified to teach a second instrumental or vocal subject, they will possess supplemental qualifications that are increasingly in demand for early music instruction professionals; these are knowledge of administrative processes at music schools, skills in the area of concert and event organization, and intercultural skills. Graduates of this degree program will therefore be oriented toward kindergartens and day-care facilities needing elementary level instructors educated in foreign languages and institutions based around an integrative concept, youth and cultural centers, adult education centers and other adult education institutions, and managerial positions in public and private music schools.
